Hello Christoph,
(without further investigation) it seems to me that handle-System is a
complete
subset of the relational logic. So it should be possible with just a few
axioms to define "schema" for a handle site consistently within the
handle System itself similiar to Database Schemas in a RDBMS regarding
types, type relations, ... Were there this kind of formal considerations
in the beginning of the systems design? Would be intresting to see it.
Sean and Sam would have to answer as to the original considerations but
having tuples as a basic data model does enable the handle system to
leverage most existing storage solutions, and vice versa, the handle
system can be used as a storage mechanism for various data storage needs.
That said, although I agree that theoretically the handle system could
be made to provide RDBMS functionality, I'd hate to see the performance
of a join :)!
On the same thought thread, there has been a steady (but not growing...)
interest in using the handle system to store RDF graphs.
The main advantage being the truly distributed administration and
organic growth of such a graph.
Storing the tuples would be easy, but the problem occurs if you need to
search those RDF graphs.
We are rummaging around for ways to provide a search interface service
to search specifically configured handle servers.
