Handle URI Resolver

The Handle URI Resolver is a plug-in that enables Microsoft Internet Explorer® Windows version (Internet Explorer 3 thru Internet Explorer 7) to recognize the handle protocol and resolve a handle of the form hdl:10.123/456 without using a proxy server such as http://hdl.handle.net.

THIS SOFTWARE IS BEING MADE AVAILABLE UNDER THE HANDLE URI RESOLVER LICENSE. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY AND ACCEPT THE TERMS BEFORE DOWNLOADING THE SOFTWARE.

Installation

Read the Release Notes before downloading the software.

Quit Internet Explorer before installing the URI Resolver and before running the Handle URI Resolver Configuration program. It is not necessary to uninstall an older version of the Handle URI Resolver before installing a new version. The resolver software may be incompatible with some configurations of Windows Vista.

Use the Handle URI Resolver Configuration program, accessible from the Start/Programs menu, to reset the default settings for handle resolution if necessary. (If a local handle service is used to resolve handles, use the configuration program to reset the default settings and assign the appropriate handle server. The default handle server is the Global Handle Registry® at CNRI.)

Firewall Note: The Handle URL Resolver must communicate directly with a handle service, so if you are behind a firewall, your firewall must be configured to allow outbound TCP and UDP traffic via port 2641, and outbound TCP traffic via port 8000. If the firewall is not configured to allow outbound TCP and UDP traffic, the resolver will resolve handles using a handle proxy server. This may slow down the resolution process.

Test the Handle URI Resolver

Check that the resolver software was properly installed by testing it with some existing handles. (Note that if you have navigated to a web page in IE using a handle, clicking the back arrow button on the browser will not return you to the previous page. Clicking it will reload the current page. You will have to select the previous page from the "Recent Pages" list. This is IE functionality that the Resolver software cannot change.)
