Press Release Handle System to be used in UK DfES information architecture development project September 2005 DfES, the UK Department for Education and Skills, and BECTA, the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency, are working together to develop an e-strategy for UK schools and the learning sector that will further the development of a world-class education system and a skilled workforce. RWCS Ltd. and Eduserv have been contracted to assist DfES and BECTA with a 'proof of concept' project to develop an information architecture, with federated policies of Digital Identification, metadata, and long term digital content capability, that will be compliant with UK Government Interoperability Framework (e-GIF). The 18 month project will produce a scalable working example of persistent digital identification (using the Handle System technology) with content policy, applied to a core sample of critical DfES and BECTA information. The ability of the Handle System to offer reliable resolution of permanent and unique identifiers, which can be used across any system now and enable future extension, has made it a key element of this project, namely to resolve problems that have resulted from the lack persistent identifers and metadata polices among existing digital identification and content control mechanisms at DfES and its sister agencies.
